Places that are part of Glasgow vary depending on context as Glasgow is the name of a number sub-divisions of Scotland. Arguably the most common usage of the term is to describe the local authority area styled Glasgow City. Like most large cities however, Glasgow has long outgrown the territorial limits of its original settlement area, with Glasgow City and neighboring settlements expanding towards each other to the point of their becoming a single urban settlement. In accordance with the standard practice of naming larger city-regions after the major city on which they are based, it has become common to refer to the larger area as Greater Glasgow. The extent of this single settlement area is largely undefined, with different places included for different purposes such as regional health boards, travel to work, retail catchment, and housing areas.

This area has been a registration county of Scotland since 1893, when it was removed from Lanarkshire and given the complicated title of The County of the Barony and Regality of the City of Glasgow.

Glasgow urban area
A wider area that forms a single urban settlement, the standard definition of which is that houses and buildings generally be not more than 200 metres apart (excluding parks and other designated sites). It should not be confused with a metropolitan area, which is much larger and does not form a single settlement. This version of Glasgow is termed Greater Glasgow by the Register General of Scotland, and is listed by the UK Government as being the fifth largest urban area in the United Kingdom and 34th in the European Union, with a population of 1.2 million people: It includes the following places; Airdrie, Bargeddie, Barrhead, Bearsden, Bellshill, Bishopbriggs, Bothwell, Busby, Calderbank, Cambuslang, Campsie, Carfin, Clarkston, Clydebank, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Elderslie, Erskine, Faifley, Giffnock, Glasgow City, Hamilton, Holytown, Howwood, Johnstone, Kilbarchan, Kilsyth, Kirkintilloch, Linwood, Milngavie, Motherwell, New Stevenston, Newarthill, Newmains, Newton Mearns, Old Kilpatrick, Paisley, Renfrew, Rutherglen, Stepps, Tannochside, Thornliebank, Uddingston, Viewpark and Wishaw.[1]
Glasgow City Region
Eight local authorities work in partnership to co-ordinate local government across what they describe as the "Glasgow City Region". These local authorities are Glasgow City Council, East Dunbartonshire Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, East Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire Council, and Inverclyde Council, and the area they define as the Glasgow City region has a population of 1.75 million. The City Region Boundaries Study, commissioned by the Scottish Government, reported a number of possible boundaries for the Glasgow city region, but places within each of the above council areas were included in all possibilities. Surprisingly places within the local authorities of Argyll and Bute, North Ayrshire, Stirling and Falkirk were also included, however it should be noted that such a large area has never been considered as any definition of Glasgow.

The whole of the City of Glasgow along with the Rutherglen area of South Lanarkshire, forms the Glasgow Electoral Region of the Scottish Parliament. This area returns 7 Members of the Scottish Parliament on the basis of proportional representation.
