Under Secretary Christopher Padilla

The Under Secretary for International Trade is a position within the United States Department of Commerce that leads the International Trade Administration.^[1] The Under Secretary also serves as a member of the Tourism Policy Council^[2] and the National Intellectual Property Council.^[3] The Under Secretary participates in the development of U.S. trade policy; identifies and resolves market access and compliance issues; administers U.S. trade laws; and undertakes a range of trade promotion and trade advocacy efforts. The current Under Secretary for International Trade is Christopher A. Padilla.^[1]

The Under Secretary is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. The position was created as a result of a June 16, 1982 law that did not require for an Under Secretary for International Trade until January 1, 1989. The Under Secretary is paid on a rate paytable for Level III of the Executive Schedule,^[4] meaning he or she receives a basic annual salary of $152,000 as of 2006.^[5] Previous Under Secretaries include Franklin L. Lavin,^[6] Acting Under Secretary Rhoda Keenum,^[7] and Robert S. LaRussa.^[8]
